a redesign where the pitch between pins 3/4 6/7 9/10 and 12/13 which is where com are next to + is wider than the other or better yet a wider pitch between all pin contacts I think is warranted for the SATA power connector. I really think the whole SATA power connector is a flawed design.ĮDIT: The contacts are not secured very well and very close to each other. In my opinion that it is not just the adapters which usually get made shoddy and out of spec so people see it happening more with them. I have always had in the back of my mind to ask what other people thought of SATA power connectors. The proprietary harness on these HPs plugged into the MB not the power supply. First one just had to replace the Proprietary harness and drive, second one was a smoke sparks and Carbon black spot show that blew out everything including the MB. Had two HP Elite 8100s short out the factory connector that was plugged into the DVD.

Or if inserted and just a little crooked it means the contacts are closer than they should be since they are slanted so you get metal whiskers and short it out. The Serial ATA (SATA) Power connector has 15 pins and is slightly larger than the SATA data connector. I hate the SATA Power Connector, Actually very easy to twist in a socket and cross pins and short. Might be a good time to finally get rid of those machines. Molex is a large manufacturer of electronics plugs and sockets that dates back to the 1940s.

I know, it's all amateur/enthusiast content, but it seems prevalent enough to be a real concern. Often refers to the 4-pin connectors used to attach DC power to the drives inside a PC cabinet. Manufacturers use the dangerous ones too. Molex has 2 power pins (one 5V and on 12V pin), each can deliver 11Amps for a total of 22Amps.
Otherwise the drives run the same, but like what has already been stated, do not use both on the same drive. There are good ones too, of course, but I've never seen one in the wild. Technically Molex can carry much more power than the SATA power connector. My understanding is the SATA power connector allows you to hot swap the drive, the molex connector can possibly damage the drive if you unplug it while power is being supplied to the drive. Insulation being bad from the start, or degrading over time The SATA connector overheating (seems to happen with splitters and GPUs) The problem seems to be down to shoddy manufacturing and/or drawing too much power:Ĭopper in the connector slowly growing until there's a short Could have been a whole different story if it happened over night. Happened at my workplace recently, luckily the user was actually present and turned the PC off. Apparently those power adapters have a tendency to catch fire with enough regularity that there's a saying: "Molex to SATA, lose all your data".
